Laughing Head
A long time - Span of 1 week
It's a little wonky lookin', but that's alright. First attempt at paper mache beyond a balloon, was stressful at times with the 1 week time limit and no clue what I was doing. The project was to make something hybrid, so it was sculpture, sound (looping laugh sound coming from under the head) and performance - part of the concept was the other people in the class to smash it with the hammer, and they did! It got a lot more damaged than that, but I didn't take a picture apparently (Ears beaten off, etc.)
Yeah, not creepy at all!
ReplyDeleteThat's so awesome!
Just a tip on making it stronger: (this is assuming you didn't do this. If ya did, ignore this comment)
ReplyDelete1: Make your head base first of cardboard and duct tape it together or glue it. Tape is probably better but hot glue works.
2: When making your paste, a combo of flour, water and school glue as a thick paste. A lot people make the paper mache really watery but this often makes the sculpture hard to hold together. Watery paste might look like more but having a thicker consistency lasts way longer.
3: Less is more. When using a thick paste, spoon out enough to spread with your index finger. Its enough to hold the newsprint on.
4: Hair dryer or something similar. The flour mixture that I talked about will go moldy if wet for too long, using a hair dryer will get it semi dry in about an hour. You don't have to constantly go at it for an hour, you can do it for a few minutes and take a break. Just make sure its semi dry before you leave it for a while. Doing this should have it dry in like a day.
The result should be rock hard. Make sure you do at least three layers.
